Purchasing Manager

Job Description

1. Independent management of the competency area, with primary focus on the management and control of all purchasing activities for the plant, enabling a high level of service to both internal and external customers.

2. Defining departmental objectives / targets, based on company objectives / targets. Consistent monitoring of the objectives / targets, applying corrective actions in the event of deviation.

3. Install departmental and staff KPI’s to measure performance against targets, providing regular feed back to subordinate team. Conduct annual appraisals; identify training needs and developing training plans.

4. Identify opportunities for improvement, applying a team approach to implement changes and monitoring results.

5. Establish efficient communication network within own area, all functions of the plant and group.

6. To gain a though knowledge of the existing supply base. Build strong customer / supplier relationships with all major suppliers, applying a lean mentality & installing service agreements (consignment stock where applicable) to stabilise price, reduce batch sizes and reduce lead times.

7. To adopt a cost down philosophy resisting all price increases in line with group purchasing initiative. Formulate and apply negotiation strategies to achieve positive financial result. Identify alternative supplier base to ensure competitive price is obtained.

8. Install and review an approved supplier base for all ‘A’ category products, measuring quality, cost and delivery. Install contingency plan to enable a switch of supplier at short notice to ensure continuity of supply. Install KPI’s to measure major supplier performance.

9. To plan and control purchasing activities to cover seasonal demand, Control max min levels of stock to minimize working capital whilst guaranteeing high a service level. Actively manage all stocks in line with current target set by group.

10. Continually monitor all stocks of items to reduce slow / non moving product. To drive an overall reduction in working capital tied up in stocks.

11. Responsibility for daily management of subordinate team, ensuring conformity to SOP’s, H&S legislation, house keeping (5S) and behavioral standards.

12. Utilise data base (Sage, MRP) systems to identify and control purchasing requirements. Gain a basic knowledge of manufacturing processes and planning functions to gain better understanding of purchasing requirements.

13. Work closely with the production and sales team, attending daily production meetings to provide progress reports, highlight issues and stay current with the day to day running of the business.

14. To coordinate all major purchases with group purchasing manager to check group availability and price. Attend group purchasing / procurement meetings as necessary.

15. To organize and manage company stock takes in accordance with internal procedures. To minimize stock deviations between actual and system values.
